The Ten Commandments Basics
Think of the Ten Commandments as God's top ten list for living well! A man called Moses received these rules directly from God on Mount Sinai, written on two stone tablets. They're part of a special promise called a covenant - basically God saying "I'll look after you if you follow these guidelines."
The brilliant thing about these commandments is how they're organised. The first three are all about loving God - putting Him first, respecting His name, and keeping Sunday special. The remaining seven focus on loving others - being kind to family, not hurting people, telling the truth, and not being jealous.
These aren't just suggestions you can ignore - they're meant to be your moral compass. Christians believe following them leads to a happier, more peaceful life for everyone.
Remember: Moses was the prophet who led the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt and brought them God's laws!
Commandments 1-5: The Foundation Rules
The first commandment tells us to put God first - not money, popularity, or even your favourite video game! The second warns against using God's name carelessly or as a swear word. The third asks us to keep Sunday holy by going to Mass and spending time with family.
Honouring your parents comes fourth - this means respecting and caring for the people who look after you. Even when they're being annoying! The fifth commandment, "You shall not kill," protects all human life because it's precious to God.
