The Big Changes of Recent Decades
Ireland has transformed dramatically in the last 30 years, and the Catholic Church's influence has dropped significantly. Several major factors caused this shift, and you can probably see the effects in your own community today.
Church scandals were devastating - terrible cases of child abuse by some priests and in Church-run institutions made many people lose trust completely. At the same time, the 'Celtic Tiger' economic boom meant people travelled more, earned more money, and got exposed to different ideas through TV and the internet.
Immigration has made Ireland much more diverse. People from Poland, Nigeria, India, and dozens of other countries brought their own religions like Islam, Hinduism, and Orthodox Christianity. Suddenly, Ireland wasn't just Catholic anymore.
Education levels rose too, and people started questioning things more instead of just accepting what they were told. This is called secularisation - when religion becomes less central to how society operates.
Real talk: Look around your classroom - you'll probably see this diversity firsthand with classmates from different religious backgrounds or no religion at all.
