Ever wonder why some students seem to glide effortlessly across... Show more

Think of locomotor skills as your body's basic travel toolkit. These are the fundamental movements that transport you from one location to another, and they're absolutely essential for PE success. Whether you're chasing down a football or sprinting to the finish line, you're using these core skills.
Locomotor skills include running, jumping, hopping, and skipping - basically any movement that gets you moving through space. The opposite would be non-locomotor skills, which happen on the spot like stretching or twisting.
Key concepts you need to master include control (managing your movements smoothly), agility (changing direction quickly), and coordination (getting different body parts working together). Speed matters too, but technique trumps raw pace every time.
Remember: Location → Locomotor! If it moves you to a new location, it's a locomotor skill.

Running isn't just about moving your legs fast - proper technique makes all the difference. Keep your body upright with your head looking forward, not down at your feet. Your arms should bend at 90 degrees and swing forward and backward from the shoulders, creating a powerful driving motion.
For your legs, focus on lifting your knees and landing on the middle of your foot rather than your heel. Push off from the balls of your feet to generate maximum power and efficiency.
Jumping involves three crucial phases: take-off, flight, and landing. During take-off, bend your knees to build power whilst swinging your arms back then forward and up. In flight, keep your body controlled. Most importantly, land on both feet with bent knees and hips to absorb the impact safely.
Top Tip: The deeper you crouch before jumping, the more explosive power you can generate for greater distance or height.

Hopping might seem simple, but it requires excellent balance and coordination. You take off and land on the same foot, using your arms to maintain stability. Focus on pushing off from the ball of your foot and establishing a steady rhythm rather than stopping and starting.
Skipping combines a step and hop in an alternating pattern that's trickier than it appears. The sequence goes: step-hop on your right foot, then step-hop on your left foot, and so on. Your arms should move naturally to help with rhythm and balance.
Here's the key difference to remember: hopping uses one foot for both take-off and landing, whilst jumping typically involves two feet for landing . Skipping alternates between feet in that distinctive step-hop pattern.
Quick Check: Can you hop on one foot for 10 seconds? This tests your balance and leg strength simultaneously.

The zig-zag drill brilliantly develops your agility and directional changes. Set up 5-6 cones about 2 metres apart in a zig-zag pattern, then weave through them as quickly as possible whilst maintaining control. Stay low with bent knees, use short quick steps before direction changes, and keep your eyes looking ahead to the next cone.
For the standing long jump, start with feet shoulder-width apart, bend your knees whilst swinging your arms back, then explode forward with a powerful arm swing. The key is coordinating your arm swing with your leg drive to maximise distance.
These drills directly transfer to sports performance. Think about Gaelic football - you need agility to dodge defenders and jumping power to catch high balls. Every locomotor skill connects to real sporting situations.
Pro Technique: In the zig-zag drill, push off hard from your outside foot when changing direction - this gives you the quickest, most controlled turn.

Remember the fundamental difference: hopping uses one foot for take-off and landing, jumping usually involves two feet for landing, and skipping follows the step-hop alternating pattern. These definitions frequently appear in PE assessments.
Common mistakes include looking down at your feet (which ruins your balance) and rushing without proper technique. Always prioritise smooth, controlled movements over pure speed - good form leads to better performance anyway.
Your warm-up routine matters enormously. Light jogging or gentle skipping prepares your muscles and prevents injury. Connect these skills to your favourite sports to make them more meaningful and memorable.
Memory Aid: Think of hurling - you sprint to reach the sliotar (running), leap to catch high balls (jumping), and need quick direction changes (agility). All locomotor skills in action!

The app is very easy to use and well designed. I have found everything I was looking for so far and have been able to learn a lot from the presentations! I will definitely use the app for a class assignment! And of course it also helps a lot as an inspiration.

Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.

I think it’s very much worth it and you’ll end up using it a lot once you get the hang of it and even after looking at others notes you can still ask your Artificial intelligence buddy the question and ask to simplify it if you still don’t get it!!! In the end I think it’s worth it 😊👍 ⚠️Also DID I MENTION ITS FREEE YOU DON’T HAVE TO PAY FOR ANYTHING AND STILL GET YOUR GRADES IN PERFECTLY❗️❗️⚠️

I found this app a couple years ago and it has only gotten better since then. I really love it because it can help with written questions and photo questions. Also, it can find study guides that other people have made as well as flashcard sets and practice tests. The free version is also amazing for students who might not be able to afford it. Would 100% recommend
