What is LCPE All About?
Ever wondered why some athletes perform better under pressure or how sport shapes our culture? LCPE is your chance to dive into these questions properly. It's not just about playing games - you'll explore the science behind performance, analyse social issues in sport, and develop skills that'll make you a smarter performer.
The course aims to make you physically literate, which basically means having the ability, confidence, and motivation to stay active for life. Think of it as becoming fluent in the language of sport and movement.
You'll develop critical thinking skills too - no more believing every fitness influencer online without questioning their methods. The course teaches you to evaluate information properly and understand the ethical side of sport, from fairness to equality issues.
Remember: Physical literacy is a key buzzword - it's about lifelong engagement with activity, not just being good at one sport.
Course Structure: Two Main Strands
The entire course splits into two complementary areas that cover everything from muscle fibres to media influence.
Strand 1: Towards Optimum Performance focuses on the scientific side. You'll study how we learn skills, what makes athletes tick psychologically, and how to plan training programmes. This includes fitness components like strength and endurance, plus sports psychology concepts like motivation and anxiety management.
Strand 2: Contemporary Issues in Physical Activity explores sport's role in society. You'll examine how government promotes physical activity, tackle ethical dilemmas like doping, and analyse how technology has transformed modern sport through innovations like VAR and Hawk-Eye.
Both strands connect constantly - understanding the science helps you appreciate the social issues, and vice versa. Gender participation, media commercialisation, and barriers to activity all link back to performance principles.
Key Point: Everything you study fits into one of these strands - use them to organise your revision and connect different topics together.
Assessment Structure: Three Components
Your final grade comes from three different parts, so you can't rely on just being brilliant at one aspect.
The Written Examination carries the most weight at 50% - it's a 2.5-hour paper covering theory from both strands. You'll face short questions, case studies, and longer analytical questions that test your ability to apply concepts to real sporting situations.
The Performance Assessment is worth 30% and requires video evidence of you competing in a real game or competition. This isn't about being the best player - it's about demonstrating a range of skills, techniques, and tactical understanding under actual match pressure.
Your Physical Activity Project accounts for 20% and involves choosing a role as performer, coach, or choreographer. You'll analyse performance, identify weaknesses, implement a 4-week improvement plan, and evaluate the results in a digital submission.
Important: The PAP and PA are completely separate - you analyse and improve in one, demonstrate performance in another. Choose different activities for each component.
Assessment Details and Success Tips
The Performance Assessment requires proper competitive footage - no training drills or skills tests. For Gaelic football, you'd need clips showing soloing, passing, and tackling in actual matches. Quality footage from sports you play regularly with teams or clubs works best.
Your Physical Activity Project needs solid documentation throughout the 4-week period. Keep detailed logs of what you did, how you felt, what worked, and what didn't. This evidence forms the backbone of your project, regardless of whether you choose performer, coach, or choreographer role.
The written exam features three sections: short questions (answer all), case studies (compulsory), and longer questions (pick 3 from 5). Practice past papers regularly since this component determines half your final grade.
