Colscaradh - Dán le Pádraig Mac Suibhne
Pádraig Mac Suibhne (1942-2020) was born in Ard na Rátha, Co. Donegal. His father worked as a priest's assistant in Maynooth College. Mac Suibhne studied Irish and History, became a secondary school teacher, and spent time in Portlaoise Prison for IRA connections, though never convicted.
The poem "Colscaradh" (Divorce) has a simple, clear title that leaves no doubt about its subject matter. The poem reflects the divorce referendum that happened during the eighties.
Background context: The poem explores a couple who married but whose relationship failed due to incompatible differences. The traditional man wanted conventional married life, whilst the modern woman desired independence and equality.
The poem shows different desires - he wanted traditional domestic life whilst she sought contemporary lifestyle. Their relationship couldn't succeed, leading to separation and divorce as the solution.
Themes include passion-failure, bitter love, sadness, lack of understanding, and contrasting desires. The poem creates pictures of both traditional marriage expectations and modern independent women seeking love alongside education and career equality.
Contemporary relevance: This poem reflects how divorce became increasingly common in Irish society during social change.
