Causes and Leaders of the 1916 Rising
The Rising emerged from several key factors. Home Rule for Ireland had been delayed due to WWI, frustrating nationalists who'd been promised self-government. This created a split in the Irish Volunteers - John Redmond led those who supported Britain in the war, while Eoin MacNeill led those focused solely on Ireland's interests. Meanwhile, the secretive Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB) was planning a rebellion, boosted by the cultural nationalism movement that had rekindled Irish pride.
The rebellion was led by seven key figures, remembered by the memory trick: "Please Tell Someone Just To Eat Jam" - Patrick Pearse (teacher and poet), Tom Clarke (veteran revolutionary), Sean Mac Diarmada (IRB organiser), Joseph Plunkett (military planner), Thomas MacDonagh (teacher), Eamonn Ceannt (Volunteer officer), and James Connolly (Irish Citizen Army leader).
The rebels planned to unite the Irish Volunteers with the Irish Citizen Army and receive German weapons via the ship 'Aud'. However, luck wasn't on their side - the Aud was captured by British forces, and MacNeill issued a last-minute countermanding order that drastically reduced fighter numbers.

The Rising and Its Legacy
On Monday, 24th April 1916, rebels seized key Dublin buildings including the GPO (their headquarters), Four Courts, and Boland's Mill. Outside the GPO, Pearse read the Proclamation of the Irish Republic - effectively declaring Ireland independent. The British army quickly surrounded the city and used artillery to pound rebel positions, forcing a surrender by Saturday to prevent more civilian deaths.
The aftermath was brutal - 450 people died and Dublin's centre was destroyed. Between 3-12 May, fifteen leaders were executed at Kilmainham Gaol, with James Connolly's execution while tied to a chair (due to his injuries) particularly shocking the public. This turned public opinion from anger towards the rebels into sympathy for their cause.
The Rising ultimately failed because there weren't enough fighters (only about 1,500), there was little nationwide support, and the rebels were vastly outnumbered by British forces. Despite this military defeat, the Rising became the spark that ignited Ireland's independence movement. It inspired a new generation of nationalists, transformed the executed leaders into martyrs, and led to surging support for Sinn Féin, setting the stage for the War of Independence (1919-1921).
