The River Shannon Dam: Ireland's Engineering Game-Changer
Back in 1929, the ESB made a bold move by building Ireland's first major hydroelectric power station at Ardnacrusha on the River Shannon. This wasn't your typical dam location though - most dams go on upper river courses, but the Shannon's unusually flat profile meant Ardnacrusha in Co. Clare was the only viable spot.
The engineering was pretty impressive. The river drops 30m over just 20km here, which massively increases water velocity - perfect for generating power. To make it work, they built the Parteen Weir across the river, which artificially raised water levels in three major loughs: Derg, Allen, and Ree.
This flooding wasn't without consequences. Farmland got submerged and farmers needed compensation for their lost land. The engineers had to construct 18m high embankments along a specially-built canal to prevent even more flooding of surrounding areas.
Key Point: The Shannon is Ireland's longest river, making this dam project particularly significant for the country's water systems.

The app is very easy to use and well designed. I have found everything I was looking for so far and have been able to learn a lot from the presentations! I will definitely use the app for a class assignment! And of course it also helps a lot as an inspiration.
This app is really great. There are so many study notes and help [...]. My problem subject is French, for example, and the app has so many options for help. Thanks to this app, I have improved my French. I would recommend it to anyone.
Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.
The Positive and Negative Impacts of Dams on Natural River Processes
Ever wondered how human engineering projects can completely change natural river systems? When we build dams and other structures on rivers, we're essentially redesigning how water moves across the landscape, creating a ripple effect of changes both upstream and downstream.
