Lega, velikost in ključni pojmi Evrope
Predstavljaj si Evropo kot velik polotok Azije - skupaj tvorita kopno, ki mu pravimo Evrazija. Meja med njima ni naravna, ampak smo si jo ljudje dogovorili.
Evropa leži v celoti na severni polobli in skozi njo poteka začetni poldnevnik pri Greenwichu. Čeprav je majhna, je zelo gosto poseljena - tu živi ogromno ljudi na razmeroma majhnem prostoru.
Zapomniti si moraš nekaj ključnih pojmov: fjordi so tisti čudoviti ozki zalivi v Norveški, relief pa pomeni, kako je oblikovano zemeljsko površje. Stara gorovja so nižja in zaobljena (nastala pred milijoni let), mlada gorovja pa visoka in ostra - kot naše Alpe!
Pomembno: Razumevanje lege in naravnih značilnosti ti pomaga razumeti, zakaj se je zgodovina razvila tako, kot se je, in zakaj ljudje živijo, kot živijo.
Meje in razčlenjena obala Evrope
Meje Evrope si lahko enostavno zapomniš: sever - Severno ledeno morje, zahod - Atlantski ocean, jug - Sredozemsko in Črno morje. Na vzhodu pa je tista dogovorna meja po gorovju Ural, reki Ural in Kaspijskem jezeru.
Najbolj fascinantna je razčlenjena obala z množico polotokov in otokov. Imamo Skandinavski polotok (Norveška, Švedska), Iberski (Španija, Portugalska), Apeninski (Italija) in Balkanski polotok.
Ta razčlenjenost ni naključna - prav zaradi nje so Evropejci postali odlični pomorščaki in trgovci. Morje je bilo vedno blizu!
Zanimivost: Zaradi razčlenjene obale ima Evropa najdaljšo obalno črto glede na velikost med vsemi celinami.
Relief - od nižavij do mladih gorovij
Relief v Evropi je kot velika mozaika treh glavnih delov. Najprej imamo nižavja in kotline, ki zavzemajo največ prostora - tu je tudi tisto ogromno Vzhodnoevropsko nižavje in naša Panonska nižina. Ta območja so zlata vredna za kmetijstvo!
Stara gorovja so nastala že davno in so se "obrabila" - Skandinavsko gorovje in Ural imajo zaobljene vrhove. Mlada gorovja pa so nasprotje - visoka, ostra, strma! Alpe, Pireneji, Dinaridi so nastali zaradi trčenja Afriške in Evrazijske plošče.
Zakaj je to pomembno? Nižavja omogočajo kmetijstvo in gradnjo mest, gorovja pa turizem in so vir rek.
Pomni: Če je gorovje staro = nizko in zaobljeno. Če je mlado = visoko in ostro!
Podnebje - od oceanskega do celinskega
Podnebje v Evropi je odvisno od oddaljenosti od Atlantskega oceana in Severnoatlantskega toka - ta topli tok je pravi junak naše zgodbe!
Na zahodu imamo oceansko podnebje - mile zime, sveža poletja, dež čez vse leto. To je Velika Britanija, zahodna Francija. Celinsko podnebje na vzhodu je drugačno - vroča poletja, mrzle zime, kot v Rusiji ali Poljski.
Sredozemsko podnebje na jugu je najpriljubljenejše - vroča, suha poletja in mile zime z dežjem. Popolno za počitnice! Na skrajnem severu pa je polarno podnebje - mrzlo in surovo.
Ključno: Brez Severnoatlantskega toka bi bila Evropa veliko hladnejša - London bi bil mrzel kot kanadska mesta na isti zemljepisni širini!
Vode - reke in jezera Evrope
Evropska rečna mreža je gosta kot pajčevina. Tri glavne reke si moraš zapomniti: Volga je najdaljša in se izliva v Kaspijsko jezero, Donava teče skozi 10 držav (tudi mimo Slovenije) in se izliva v Črno morje, Ren pa je prometna žila Zahodne Evrope.
Jezera najdeš predvsem tam, kjer je bil nekoč led - Finska se imenuje celo "dežela tisočerih jezer"! V Alpah imamo čudovita jezera, kot je Ženevsko jezero. Največje jezero je Ladoško v Rusiji.
Reke in jezera so bile vedno pomembne za promet, trgovino in energijo. Tudi danes so ključne!
Zanimiv primer: Norveška ima fjorde zaradi ledenikov, Madžarska pa ravnine zaradi Panonske kotline - popolnoma drugačen svet na isti celini!
