Banquo's Noble Character and Wisdom

Right from the start, Banquo is presented as Macbeth's equal in battle and nobility. The Captain describes how both warriors fought valiantly together, and Duncan calls him "Noble Banquo" - establishing his reputation as an honourable soldier.

What makes Banquo truly dangerous to Macbeth is his natural nobility. Macbeth himself admits that Banquo has a "royalty of nature" that should be feared, recognising that his friend possesses the natural qualities of a true king. This wisdom guides Banquo's actions and keeps him safe from making rash decisions.

The most telling difference between the two characters appears when they first encounter the witches' prophecies. While Macbeth is immediately drawn to their promises, Banquo remains suspicious and unafraid. He warns Macbeth that supernatural forces often "tell us truths" only to "betray us in deepest consequence" - showing his moral clarity.

Key Point: Banquo's wisdom allows him to see through the witches' manipulation, unlike Macbeth who becomes morally confused about whether their influence is good or evil.

Banquo's Moral Struggles and Loyalty

Despite his noble reputation, Banquo isn't morally perfect - and that's what makes him so interesting. The witches' prophecy that he'll father kings haunts him, literally keeping him awake at night with "cursed thoughts" about potentially killing Duncan.

His conversation with Macbeth reveals this internal conflict perfectly. When Macbeth suggests they should discuss the prophecies privately, Banquo agrees "very gladly" - but why does this conversation need to happen away from others if he's truly innocent?

The most crucial moment comes when Macbeth tries to win his support. Banquo's response is brilliantly clear: he'll cooperate with Macbeth only if his allegiance to Duncan remains uncompromised. This shows his moral line in the sand - loyalty to the rightful king comes first.

After Duncan's murder, Banquo's suspicions become explicit. He states that Macbeth now has everything the witches promised, and he fears Macbeth "played most foully for it" - showing he knows exactly what happened but chooses not to act on this knowledge.

Key Point: Banquo's greatest flaw isn't evil ambition like Macbeth's, but rather his failure to act on his suspicions about Duncan's murder, making him complicit through inaction.
