Mid-Term Break by Seamus Heaney

Ever wondered how a family deals with sudden tragedy? This poem takes you through one of the most heartbreaking experiences - losing a young family member.

The poem follows a teenage speaker who's called home from boarding school after his little brother dies in a car accident. Right from the start, we see the isolation he feels sitting alone in the college sick bay, counting funeral bells. When he arrives home, everything feels different - his father is crying (something he's never seen before), and neighbours awkwardly try to comfort him.

The speaker finds himself caught between being a child and an adult. Big Jim Evans makes a cruel pun about the accident being "a hard blow," whilst the baby in the house continues cooing happily, completely unaware of the tragedy. People treat the speaker like he's suddenly grown up, shaking his hand and offering formal condolences.

Key insight: Notice how Heaney shows different reactions to grief - the father crying, the mother holding hands in angry silence, and the baby's innocent laughter creating a sharp contrast.

The final image of the "four foot box, a foot for every year" powerfully emphasises how young the child was and makes the loss feel even more tragic. The speaker's emotional numbness throughout shows how shock can make us feel disconnected from even the most devastating events.

The app is very easy to use and well designed. I have found everything I was looking for so far and have been able to learn a lot from the presentations! I will definitely use the app for a class assignment! And of course it also helps a lot as an inspiration.

This app is really great. There are so many study notes and help [...]. My problem subject is French, for example, and the app has so many options for help. Thanks to this app, I have improved my French. I would recommend it to anyone.

Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.
