Food Components and Chemical Elements

Your body is basically a complex chemistry set, and food provides the raw materials for every reaction happening inside you right now. Food does three main jobs: gives you energy to move and think, helps build new cells as you grow, and repairs damaged tissue when you get hurt.

All food comes down to just 11 chemical elements working together. The big six are carbon (C), hydrogen (H), oxygen (O), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and sulphur (S). Then you've got your salts like sodium (Na) and calcium (Ca), plus trace elements like iron (Fe) that you need in tiny amounts but are absolutely crucial.

These elements combine in different ways to create the six main food components: water, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, vitamins, and minerals. Think of it like LEGO blocks - same basic pieces, endless combinations.

Carbohydrates are your body's favourite energy source, made from carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. There are three types: monosaccharides (simple sugars like glucose in fruit), disaccharides (double sugars like lactose in milk), and polysaccharides (complex carbs like starch in bread and pasta).

Remember: Carbohydrates always have twice as many hydrogen atoms as oxygen atoms - that's the CX(H2O)Y formula in action!

→ Growth of new cells & repair of existing cells (tissue, organs, etc.)
Food also supplies the materials

Carbohydrates, Lipids, and Proteins

Carbohydrates aren't just for energy - they're also building materials. Cellulose forms plant cell walls, whilst chitin makes up insect shells and fungal cell walls. Your body breaks down carbs during respiration to release the energy stored in those chemical bonds.

Lipids (fats and oils) are the misunderstood heroes of nutrition. Made from carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, they include everything from the butter on your toast to the cholesterol your body actually needs. Triglycerides (three fatty acids plus glycerol) store energy, whilst phospholipids help build cell membranes.

Lipids do loads more than you'd think: they insulate your body like biological bubble wrap, waterproof your skin, cushion vital organs, and help your nerve cells send messages properly. The fat around your kidneys isn't just sitting there - it's protective padding.

Proteins are the workhorses of your body, containing carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen. They're made from chains of amino acids linked by peptide bonds. There are 20 common amino acids that combine in countless ways - like a biological alphabet creating different "words."

Fun fact: Every single enzyme in your body is a protein, which means proteins control virtually every chemical reaction keeping you alive!

Food:

Food also supplies the materials

Proteins, Vitamins, and Metabolism

Proteins have two main roles: structural (building stuff) and metabolic (controlling reactions). Keratin makes your hair and nails strong, myosin powers your muscles, and enzymes like chlorophyll capture sunlight during photosynthesis.

Your body constantly runs two types of reactions: anabolic reactions use energy to build large molecules from small ones (like photosynthesis making glucose), whilst catabolic reactions break down large molecules to release energy (like respiration and digestion). Think building up versus breaking down.

Vitamins are organic molecules that plants make but animals need from their diet. They're either fat-soluble (A, D, E, K) or water-soluble (B, C). Vitamin C builds connective tissue - the biological "glue" holding your body together. Get it from citrus fruits and leafy greens, or risk scurvy with bleeding gums and loose teeth.

Vitamin D helps you absorb calcium for strong bones and teeth. Your skin makes it from sunlight, or you can get it from dairy, fish, and eggs. Without enough, kids get rickets (soft, bent bones) and adults get weak, calcium-depleted bones.

Smart tip: Remember fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) with "ADEK" - these get stored in your body fat, whilst water-soluble ones (B, C) get flushed out regularly!

Minerals and Water

Minerals are basically salts that your body needs in tiny amounts but can't function without. Plants absorb them through roots: calcium and magnesium help make chlorophyll green, nitrates build proteins, and phosphates create ATP (your cellular energy currency) and DNA.

Animals get minerals from food. Calcium builds bones and teeth, iron makes haemoglobin carry oxygen in red blood cells, and sodium controls how much water your cells hold. It's like having the right ingredients for different biological recipes.

Water might seem boring, but it's absolutely essential. It heats up and cools down slowly, keeping your body temperature steady at 37°C. When you sweat, water absorbs loads of heat as it evaporates, cooling you down naturally.

Water's also the ultimate multitasker: it dissolves nearly everything (universal solvent), transports substances in blood and plant sap, provides the liquid environment where metabolism happens, and even participates directly in photosynthesis and respiration reactions.

Did you know: Water controls your cell shape and helps move materials in and out of cells - without it, you'd literally fall apart at the cellular level!

I think it’s very much worth it and you’ll end up using it a lot once you get the hang of it and even after looking at others notes you can still ask your Artificial intelligence buddy the question and ask to simplify it if you still don’t get it!!! In the end I think it’s worth it 😊👍 ⚠️Also DID I MENTION ITS FREEE YOU DON’T HAVE TO PAY FOR ANYTHING AND STILL GET YOUR GRADES IN PERFECTLY❗️❗️⚠️
