君の周りで起きている変化には、実は2つの全く違うタイプがあるんだ。化学変化は物質そのものが変わって新しい物質が生まれる現象で、燃焼や酸化がその典型例。一方、物理変化は氷が溶けて水になるように、物質の状態や形だけが変わる現象だよ。
化学反応式を使えば、どの物質がどのくらいの割合で反応するかがわかる。反応物（反応前の物質）と生成物（反応後にできる物質）の量的関係を数字で表せるから、計算問題でも威力を発揮するんだ。
