地層と化石の基本
君たちが住んでいる大地の下には、地球の長い歴史が層になって記録されているよ。地層は、れきや砂、泥などが長い時間をかけて積み重なってできた層状の岩石のことだ。
堆積岩には、材料の違いによっていくつかの種類がある。れき岩は川の上流で、砂岩は海岸や浅い海で、泥岩は静かな深い海でできるんだ。石灰岩はサンゴや貝の死骸が固まったもので、暖かくて浅い海の証拠だよ。
化石は地層に残された大昔の生物の死骸や生活の跡のこと。化石には2つの重要なタイプがあるんだ。示準化石は地層の時代を特定するのに使われ、示相化石は当時の環境を推測するのに役立つよ。
ポイント！ 地層の粒の大きさを見れば、当時の川の流れの速さや海の深さがわかる。大きい粒ほど流れが速い場所でできた証拠だ。
地層のでき方と基本法則
地層は基本的に水中でできることが多いよ。まず山地の岩石が風化・侵食され、川によって運ばれて海や湖に堆積する。重い粒から先に沈むから、川の上流にはれき、下流や海には細かい泥が積もるんだ。
地層を読み解くための3つの基本法則は絶対に覚えておこう。地層累重の法則では下の地層ほど古く、上ほど新しい。水平堆積の法則では地層は本来水平に積もるから、傾いていたら後から力が加わった証拠だ。
地層同定の法則は、離れた場所でも同じ示準化石が見つかれば同じ時代の地層だと判断できることを示している。これは地層の年代を比較するときにとても重要な考え方だよ。
覚えやすいコツ！ 本を積み重ねることを想像してみて。下の本ほど先に置かれた（古い）し、普通は水平に積むよね。地層も同じ原理だ。
化石の種類と見分け方
示準化石と示相化石の違いは、テストで必ず出題される重要なポイントだ。示準化石は生存期間が短く分布範囲が広い化石で、時代の「基準」になる。三葉虫やアンモナイトが代表例だよ。
一方、示相化石は生存期間が長く特定の環境にだけ生息していた化石で、当時の環境の「相（すがた）」を教えてくれる。サンゴなら暖かくて浅いきれいな海、アサリなら浅い海の砂泥底を表しているんだ。
古生代には三葉虫やフズリナ、中生代にはアンモナイトや恐竜、新生代にはビカリアやナウマンゾウが生きていた。これらの化石が見つかれば、その地層がいつの時代のものかすぐにわかるよ。
記憶術！ 示準の「準」は基準の「準」、示相の「相」は様子の「相」。役割を漢字で覚えると間違えにくいよ。
地層の読み取り方
地層断面図を読み解くのは、パズルを解くようで面白いよ。まず地層累重の法則を使って、下から上への堆積順序を確認しよう。
次に、断層や火成岩の貫入がどの層まで影響しているかを見るんだ。断層がA、B、C層を切っているけどD層は切っていなければ、A、B、Cが堆積した後に断層ができたことがわかる。
不整合を示す波線も重要な手がかりだ。これは地層が一度隆起して侵食され、その後また沈降して新しい地層が積もったことを表している。地球の大きな変動があった証拠なんだよ。
解き方のコツ！ 「何が何を切っているか、覆っているか」を丁寧に観察しよう。新しいものが古いものを切ったり覆ったりする原則を使えば順序がわかる。
地層研究の実際
鍵層（かぎそう）は、広い範囲に短時間で堆積した層のことで、火山灰の層が代表例だ。同じ火山灰が見つかれば、離れた場所の地層でも同じ時期のものだと比較できるよ。
地層が傾いていたり、上下が逆転していたりすることもある。もし上の地層から古い化石、下の地層から新しい化石が見つかったら、地層の逆転を疑ってみよう。

応用のヒント！ 地層は地球の日記のようなもの。一枚一枚のページ（層）に、その時代の環境や生物の情報が書き込まれているよ。
