Mo Ghrá-sa - A Modern Irish Love Poem
Forget everything you think you know about love poems - Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill has created something brilliantly different here. Born in 1952 in Lancashire and raised in the Kerry Gaeltacht, she became Ireland's Professor of Poetry in 2001 and is known for her collections like An Dealg Droighin (1981) and Fear Suaithinseach (1984).
This poem is basically a satirical take-down of traditional Irish love songs from 1770-1850. Back then, poets would compare their lovers to perfect flowers and praise their flawless beauty - it was all very over-the-top and unrealistic. Ní Dhomhnaill flips this completely by having a woman honestly describe her partner's flaws in a humorous, affectionate way.
The poem's genius lies in its honesty. Instead of comparing her love to beautiful hawthorn blossoms, she points out that his eyes are too close together and his hair definitely isn't silky smooth. She even jokes that daisies will only grow from his ears when he's dead! Yet despite cataloguing all his imperfections, she still loves him deeply.
Key insight: The bracketed sections throughout the poem are Ní Dhomhnaill's clever way of adding extra cheeky commentary - like she's whispering sarcastic asides to the reader.
What makes this modern love poetry so powerful is how it values personality and kindness over physical perfection. Her partner gives her apples (life's necessities) and grapes (life's luxuries) - showing that real love is about care, generosity and genuine connection, not looking like a romantic hero.

This app is really great. There are so many study notes and help [...]. My problem subject is French, for example, and the app has so many options for help. Thanks to this app, I have improved my French. I would recommend it to anyone.
Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.
