Getting ready for your Irish oral exam? This comprehensive guide... Show more

Your oral exam starts with simple introductions, so nail these basics first. You'll need to share your name, age, birthday, address and exam number - all straightforward stuff that gets you warmed up.
When describing yourself (mé féin), focus on both physical features and personality traits. Think hair colour, height, whether you wear glasses, plus character descriptions like beomhar (lively), cairdiúil (friendly) or cainteach (talkative).
Weather descriptions are dead handy for filling awkward pauses. Master phrases like "tá an ghrian ag scoillteadh na gcloch" (the sun is splitting the stones) for sunny days, or "tá sé ag cur báistí" (it's raining) for typical Irish weather.
Top Tip: Remember, you control the conversation! Steer towards topics you're comfortable discussing and show off your best vocabulary.

Family questions (mo chlann) are exam favourites, so prepare detailed descriptions of each family member. Include their names, ages, what school year they're in, and their personalities. Don't forget occupations - know how to say your parents' jobs in Irish.
Relationship dynamics show off advanced language skills. Discuss whether you get on well with siblings, if your parents give you enough freedom, or if you sometimes argue with your dad because "is fear an-ceanndána é" (he's very stubborn).
Talk about your friends with genuine enthusiasm. Describe your closest mate's personality, what they want to do in the future, and why your friendship works. This shows emotional maturity and vocabulary range.
Pets are brilliant conversation extenders. Even if you just have two dogs for eight years, you can discuss their personalities, allergies preventing you from getting a cat, or daily dog walks.
Remember: Use varied tenses and throw in some módh coinníollach (conditional mood) to impress examiners with your grammatical range.

Describing your house type and layout gives you loads of vocabulary opportunities. Whether it's a bungalow, apartment, or semi-detached house, paint a picture of each room and what makes your home compórdach agus teolaí (comfortable and warm).
Your local area (mo cheantar) offers rich discussion material. Describe location, atmosphere, and transport links. Is it between the sea and mountains? Does it have a friendly atmosphere with everyone being chatty? Can you take the DART to Dublin?
Local amenities (háiseanna) showcase practical vocabulary. List cafés, restaurants, sports clubs, swimming pools, and shops. This proves you can discuss real-world locations confidently.
Don't shy away from social problems - they demonstrate sophisticated thinking. Discuss traffic, parental complaints, or minor drug issues, then suggest solutions like more investment or additional bus services during rush hour.
Smart Move: Always balance criticism with positive aspects. Show you can think critically while appreciating your community.

Your school description should cover practical details and atmosphere. Mention when it was built, how many students attend, whether it's co-educational, and what technology you use. Smart tablets in classrooms shows you're discussing modern education.
Daily routine questions are perfect for showing off time expressions and sequencing. Start from waking up at half-six, describe breakfast, bus journey, assembly, class periods, and break times. Include extracurricular activities like choir or Model UN.
School facilities (háiseanna) vocabulary is essential. Hockey pitches, laboratories, theatre, cafeteria, sports hall, and basketball courts all feature regularly. Lucky you if your school is new with excellent facilities!
Uniform opinions reveal personal views while using comparison language. Whether you love or hate it, discuss advantages like reducing stress and competition, or practical considerations about colour choices.
Exam Tip: Use specific time expressions and vary your sentence structures to avoid sounding repetitive or robotic.

Discuss your eight Leaving Cert subjects with genuine enthusiasm. Beyond the compulsory Irish, English and Maths, explain why you chose your options and which teacher provides the best inspiration and support.
Homework load is relatable content every examiner understands. Two to three hours nightly sounds reasonable, but mention weekend essay overload for authenticity. This shows you understand academic pressure.
Transition Year experiences offer brilliant storytelling opportunities. Work experience, musical productions, college visits, and school trips demonstrate personal growth. Whether you visited Trinity College or wrote your own show, these experiences shaped your education.
School rules and consequences show you understand institutional structures. Phone policies, uniform requirements, absence notes, and VSware points are real-world examples that prove practical language use.
Leadership Boost: If you're a school leader, discuss morning temperature checks and helping younger students - it shows responsibility and maturity.

College plans excite most students, so let that enthusiasm show. If you need 589 points for your course, explain exactly what subjects you'll study and why they interest you. Political Science, Philosophy, Economics and Sociology demonstrate serious academic ambition.
Your career motivation reveals personal values. Whether inspired by AOC in America or Jacinda Ardern in New Zealand, show you understand global leadership and want to help people worldwide.
Part-time work experience proves real-world readiness. Restaurant work - serving customers, collecting dirty dishes, sweeping floors - might seem basic, but it shows work ethic and responsibility. Earning seventy euro weekly for clothes or food demonstrates financial awareness.
Connect your current studies to future goals. If you love Politics and Society as your best subject, explain how this links to your university course and career aspirations in research or international organisations.
Future Focus: Use conditional tenses confidently - "dá geobhainn na pointí, rachainn go..." shows grammatical sophistication.

Your weekend routine balances study pressure with relaxation. Even with Leaving Cert stress, you still walk with friends, visit their houses, watch films and eat nice food together. TikTok and journaling help you unwind authentically.
Drama involvement showcases creativity and confidence. Two performances yearly, writing your own plays, fundraising for charity trips, and winning drama festivals demonstrate commitment and talent beyond academics.
Music passion adds emotional depth to conversations. Singing with school choir, playing guitar and ukulele, attending Longitude or Croke Park concerts shows cultural engagement. Describe that electric atmosphere when your favourite band performed.
Reading habits prove intellectual curiosity. Fantasy books, especially long series, show sustained interest. Meeting your favourite author and getting books signed creates memorable personal stories that examiners love hearing.
Passion Project: When discussing hobbies, let genuine enthusiasm show through your voice and vocabulary choices.

Hockey training five times weekly demonstrates serious athletic commitment. Break down your schedule - Monday and Thursday hour-and-a-half sessions, Tuesday's eighty minutes, Wednesday matches, Friday's single hour. This shows time management skills.
Your playing position and tactical understanding prove sport-specific knowledge. Whether you play wing defence or midfield, discuss strategy and teamwork using technical vocabulary that impresses examiners.
Live sporting events create exciting storytelling opportunities. Watching hockey Olympic qualifiers in Dublin or attending championship matches shows cultural participation beyond school. Describe that electric atmosphere when Ireland won.
Girls' sport investment demonstrates social awareness. Discuss how the government should encourage young girls to continue playing sport, addressing facility shortages and participation drops that affect female athletics nationwide.
Health Focus: Connect sports to mental and physical wellbeing - reduced stress, better fitness, improved mood - showing mature understanding.

Christmas Day traditions reveal family values and cultural practices. Early morning excitement, present opening after breakfast, helping prepare dinner, and extended family gathering around two o'clock paint vivid pictures of Irish celebration.
Health experiences keep conversations grounded. Regular winter flu, colds, or coughs requiring bed rest and doctor visits are universally relatable. Never breaking bones shows good fortune, while emphasising health importance demonstrates maturity.
Lockdown challenges reflect recent shared experiences. Online schoolwork using smart tablets and educational software, missing friends, taking daily dog walks, and binge-watching Netflix and Disney+ shows pandemic resilience.
Domestic holidays prove you can discuss local tourism. Lough Gorman trips with friends, hotel stays with swimming pools and spa facilities, shopping expeditions, and restaurant visits demonstrate leisure vocabulary.
Real Talk: Admitting you missed friends and felt lonely during lockdown shows emotional honesty that examiners appreciate.

I think it’s very much worth it and you’ll end up using it a lot once you get the hang of it and even after looking at others notes you can still ask your Artificial intelligence buddy the question and ask to simplify it if you still don’t get it!!! In the end I think it’s worth it 😊👍 ⚠️Also DID I MENTION ITS FREEE YOU DON’T HAVE TO PAY FOR ANYTHING AND STILL GET YOUR GRADES IN PERFECTLY❗️❗️⚠️

I found this app a couple years ago and it has only gotten better since then. I really love it because it can help with written questions and photo questions. Also, it can find study guides that other people have made as well as flashcard sets and practice tests. The free version is also amazing for students who might not be able to afford it. Would 100% recommend
