About the Poet - Máirtín Ó Direáin
Máirtín Ó Direáin wasn't just writing about some imaginary place - he was describing his actual childhood home, which makes the poem even more powerful and authentic.
Born on Inis Mór in the Aran Islands in 1910, Ó Direáin left his island home in 1928 to work in the Post Office in Galway. Later, he moved to Dublin where he spent the rest of his life, but clearly his heart remained with the islands.
His major poetry collections include Coinnle Geala (1942) and Móna agus Dánta Eile (1957). He died in Dublin in 1988, but his beautiful descriptions of island life continue to capture readers' imaginations.
