Understanding Earthquakes

Earthquakes occur when pressure builds up between tectonic plates until one suddenly slips, releasing massive energy. This typically happens at plate boundaries where plates collide or slide past each other along fault lines.

When an earthquake strikes, it follows a clear sequence. First, plates suddenly move along the fault line. The focus is the exact point underground where the earthquake begins. From there, shock waves or tremors spread outward, making the Earth's surface shake for seconds or sometimes up to a minute.

The epicentre is the point on the Earth's surface directly above the focus. This is usually where the tremors are strongest and cause the most damage.

Did you know? The deeper the focus of an earthquake, the less damage it typically causes at the surface, even though the energy released might be similar to a shallower earthquake.

Measuring and Preparing for Earthquakes

After the main earthquake, smaller tremors called aftershocks may continue for hours or days. These can sometimes cause more damage than the initial earthquake as they further weaken already damaged structures.

Scientists measure earthquakes using a seismograph. This clever device has a base that shakes with the ground while a freely hanging weight stays still. A pen attached to the weight records the ground movement on paper. The Richter scale (1-12) then describes the magnitude or size of the earthquake.

We can prepare for earthquakes in several ways. Scientists use laser beams to track plate movements and seismographs to detect early vibrations. Communities can conduct earthquake drills, create emergency exits, and bolt furniture to walls. Buildings can be constructed with shock absorbers and reinforced with steel.

Safety tip: During an earthquake, remember to "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" - get under a sturdy piece of furniture and hold onto it until the shaking stops.

Real Earthquake Impacts

The 2015 Nepal earthquake shows how devastating these events can be. Its epicentre was high in the Himalayas, but effects reached as far as China and India. This happened because Nepal sits on the boundary between the Indian and Eurasian plates, where the Indian Plate moves northward about 4cm yearly, causing the rock to buckle and form the Himalayas.

Earthquakes that occur under the ocean can trigger tsunamis - massive waves that cause incredible destruction when they reach land. The Japan tsunami showed how entire towns could be completely destroyed by these powerful waves.

After the Japan tsunami, more than 500,000 people had to leave their homes. The seawater also ruined farmland by leaving salt in the soil, making it impossible to grow crops for years afterward.

Connection point: Earthquakes and tsunamis demonstrate the incredible power of nature and why understanding Earth's systems is so important for our safety and survival.

The app is very easy to use and well designed. I have found everything I was looking for so far and have been able to learn a lot from the presentations! I will definitely use the app for a class assignment! And of course it also helps a lot as an inspiration.

This app is really great. There are so many study notes and help [...]. My problem subject is French, for example, and the app has so many options for help. Thanks to this app, I have improved my French. I would recommend it to anyone.

Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.

Earthquakes are sudden, powerful movements in the Earth's crust that release enormous energy as shock waves or tremors. They happen at plate boundaries and can cause devastating damage to communities and landscapes.
