DNA and RNA are the molecular blueprints that control everything... Show more

Think of DNA as nature's instruction manual, written in a four-letter alphabet. These letters are the nitrogen bases: adenine (A), thymine (T), cytosine (C), and guanine (G). What makes DNA brilliant is how these bases always pair up in specific ways - A with T, and G with C - like perfectly matched puzzle pieces.
DNA isn't just a single strand floating about. It's actually two strands twisted together in the famous double helix shape you've probably seen in textbooks. Each strand is made up of connected nucleotides (called a polynucleotide), and the two strands stick together through weak hydrogen bonds between those complementary base pairs.
The bases fall into two categories: purines (adenine and guanine) and pyrimidines (thymine and cytosine). This pairing system is absolutely crucial because it's what allows DNA to copy itself accurately and pass information from one generation to the next.
Quick Tip: Remember base pairing with "Apple Tree" and "Car Garage" - simple memory tricks that actually work!

Here's where DNA gets really clever. Each gene contains the recipe for making one protein, but proteins are massive molecules made of thousands of amino acids. So how does DNA encode all that information? Through codons - groups of three consecutive bases that each code for one specific amino acid.
Most of your DNA (about 97%) doesn't actually code for proteins at all. This non-coding DNA was once dismissed as "junk DNA," but scientists now know it has important functions. The remaining 3% is coding DNA made up of those crucial codons.
DNA replication happens during interphase when cells are preparing to divide. The double helix unwinds, enzymes break the bonds between base pairs, and each original strand acts as a template. New DNA bases from the cytoplasm enter the nucleus and pair up with their complementary partners on each template strand.
The brilliant result? Two identical double helixes, each containing half old DNA and half new DNA. This ensures every new cell gets exactly the same genetic information as the original.
Remember: DNA replication is like making a photocopy where the original never gets used up - you always keep one copy of each strand as a backup!

Genetic screening involves diagnostic tests to identify whether someone has or carries genes for genetic diseases like cystic fibrosis or sickle cell anaemia. It's becoming increasingly important in modern medicine for early detection and treatment planning.
DNA profiling is the technique used in forensics and paternity testing. Scientists break down cells to release DNA, cut the DNA into fragments using enzymes, then separate these fragments by size through electrophoresis. The resulting pattern is unique to each individual (except identical twins).
RNA differs from DNA in several key ways that you need to know for exams. RNA uses the bases A, U, G, C (notice uracil instead of thymine), it's single-stranded rather than double, and it's found in both the nucleus and cytoplasm. The sugar in RNA is ribose instead of deoxyribose.
These differences aren't random - they reflect RNA's different job. While DNA stores information long-term, RNA is more like a temporary messenger that carries instructions around the cell.
Memory Trick: RNA is like a text message (single strand, temporary) while DNA is like a filing cabinet (double strand, permanent storage)!

Protein synthesis is how your cells turn the genetic code in DNA into actual working proteins. This happens through two main stages you absolutely must understand: transcription and translation.
Transcription occurs in the nucleus. Enzymes unwind the DNA double helix, and RNA polymerase reads one DNA strand to create messenger RNA (mRNA). The mRNA has bases complementary to the DNA template, essentially creating a portable copy of the genetic instructions.
The mRNA then travels into the cytoplasm carrying codons - three-base sequences that specify which amino acid to add next. Some codons are special: there's a start codon that begins protein synthesis and stop codons that end it.
Translation happens at ribosomes in the cytoplasm. Transfer RNA (tRNA) molecules, each carrying a specific amino acid, match up with complementary codons on the mRNA. Ribosome subunits attach to the mRNA to form the complete ribosome where protein assembly occurs.
Key Point: Think of transcription as "copying the recipe" and translation as "cooking the meal" - both steps are essential for making proteins!

The final steps of protein synthesis show how your cells assemble amino acids with incredible precision. As tRNA molecules arrive at the ribosome, they bring their attached amino acids and align them according to the sequence determined by the mRNA codons.
The magic happens when these aligned amino acids bond together to form the growing protein chain. Each tRNA drops off its amino acid and moves away, while new tRNAs continue arriving until the ribosome reaches a stop codon on the mRNA.
When the stop codon is reached, protein synthesis terminates and the completed protein is released. The newly formed protein then folds into its functional three-dimensional shape, ready to carry out its specific job in your body.
This entire process - from DNA to mRNA to protein - is happening millions of times in your cells right now. It's how your body makes everything from enzymes that digest your food to antibodies that fight infections.
Amazing Fact: Your cells can make about 2,000 proteins per second through this process - that's faster than the world's best factories!

I think it’s very much worth it and you’ll end up using it a lot once you get the hang of it and even after looking at others notes you can still ask your Artificial intelligence buddy the question and ask to simplify it if you still don’t get it!!! In the end I think it’s worth it 😊👍 ⚠️Also DID I MENTION ITS FREEE YOU DON’T HAVE TO PAY FOR ANYTHING AND STILL GET YOUR GRADES IN PERFECTLY❗️❗️⚠️

Knowunity is the BEST app I’ve used in a minute. This is not an ai review or anything this is genuinely coming from a 7th grade student (I know 2011 im young) but dude this app is a 10/10 i have maintained a 3.8 gpa and have plenty of time for gaming. I love it and my mom is just happy I got good grades
