Sigma Notation Basics

Think of sigma notation as mathematical shorthand that saves you from writing out endless addition problems. The symbol ∑ (sigma) literally means "the sum of" - it's your signal that you need to add things up.

Here's how it works: when you see $\sum_{n=1}^{8}(2n+4)$, you're looking at instructions to substitute values from n=1 up to n=8 into the expression $2n+4$, then add all those results together. So you'd calculate $2×1+4$ + $2×2+4$ + $2×3+4$ + ... + $2×8+4$.

The general form shows this even more clearly. When you see $\sum_{n=1}^{n}(4n²+5n-2)$, this represents the sum formula (often called Sn) for the expression 4n²+5n-2. This notation tells you exactly which values to substitute and what to do with them.

Remember: The bottom number tells you where to start, the top number tells you where to stop, and the expression tells you what to calculate at each step.
